What are IP protection types?
The abbreviation IP stands for International Protection or also Ingress Protection (protection from intrusion). In our case, the protection class for coaxial connectors provides information about their suitability for certain environmental conditions. This classification clearly clarifies whether a connector is suitable for outdoor use, for example, or whether it could be damaged by penetrating moisture. Incidentally, similar requirements for cables are explained in the article “Jacket materials for coaxial cables”. The individual protection classes are defined within Germany according to DIN and internationally according to ISO.
How is the IP code composed?
The code for the IP protection class always consists of the letters IP and two digits. In the ISO range, a “K” is added to the two highest protection classes in case of increased requirements (e.g. IP69K). In general, there are the protection classes IP00 to IP69 (or IP69K), with the former offering no protection at all and the latter offering maximum protection.
The first digit describes the protection against contact and foreign bodies and the second digit the protection against water. The higher the number, the better the protection against the described influence. This can be easily read in the following two tables, which explain the gradations of the protection classes:
1. Reference number |
Protection against touch |
Protection against foreign bodies |
0 |
No protection against touch |
No protection against foreign bodies |
1 |
Protection against large-area contact with the hand |
protection against foreign bodies with ∅ ≥ 50mm |
2 |
Protection against touching with the finger |
protection against foreign bodies with ∅ ≥ 12mm |
3 |
Protection against contact with tools or wire |
protection against foreign bodies with ∅ ≥ 2,5mm |
4 |
Protection against contact with tools or wire |
protection against foreign bodies with ∅ ≥ 1,0mm |
5 (5K) |
Complete contact protection |
protection against dust deposits inside |
6 (6K) |
Complete contact protection |
protection against dust deposits (dust-tight) |
2. Reference number |
Protection against water |
0 |
no protection |
1 |
Protection against vertically falling dripping water |
2 |
Protection against diagonally falling dripping water up to 15°. |
3 |
Protection against dripping water falling at an angle of up to 60°. |
4 |
Protection against splashing water from all directions |
5 |
Protection against water jets from any direction |
6 |
Protection against strong jets of water |
7 |
Protection against submersion up to 30min |
8 |
Protection against permanent immersion |
9 |
Protection against water during high-pressure cleaning |
In our range we have some connectors whose manufacturers have defined an IP protection class for their products. A good example of this are our connectors from Telegärtner, almost all of which are IP classified.

Many coaxial cables are designed to withstand high temperatures of up to 200°C without damage. These usually have a dielectric made of PTFE and an outer sheath made of FEB, PFA or PTFE. Cables with a dielectric and sheath made of Kapton are even temperature-resistant up to 250°C.
Please note: If temperature-resistant cables are assembled with the matching connectors and bend protectors, the maximum temperature is always that of the component with the lowest temperature resistance. If the coaxial cable is suitable for temperatures up to 200°C, but the connectors are only suitable for temperatures up to 100°C, the maximum temperature for the entire assembly is 100°C. If the maximum temperature is exceeded, the cable must be assembled properly. If this is exceeded, proper functioning is no longer guaranteed.
Many of our cables have standardised fire properties according to IEC60332-3 or DIN VDE 0472-804. As a rule, the basic requirement for this is that the cables do not contain halogens, whose fire properties would be very unfavourable. When substances such as chlorine or bromine burn, toxic substances are produced and a lot of smoke is emitted, which is why they are banned in many areas of application. Cable sheaths made of PVC contain halogens and are therefore not suitable for these areas. Their advantage, on the other hand, is the cheaper price compared to other materials.
In our range, many halogen-free cables are provided with a manufacturer-specific additive. Examples are LSNH (Low Smoke No Halogen), LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) or FRNC.

You can choose between
assemblies, which are assembled exclusively with brands of well-known manufacturers, and assemblies by manufacturers, who are less well-known. This does not mean, that the quality of the connectors and the resulting cable assemblies are worse or worth less. But it might be an option for especially price-sensitive applications, as the assemblies are usually between 2 to 5 € more favourable than goods of brand manufacturers.
Example: BNC cable assembly by Telegärtner or by our alternative manufacturer
Price difference: 2.80 €
We check every batch of the connectors on technical parameters and pay close attention to a flawless production. Thus you can be sure, that even the most favourable cable connection is of very high quality.
Please note, that we are not saving on the cable! Even the favourable cables are manufactured with lines of well-known brand manufacturers.
Therefore, the quality of our products continues to be in our focus.
You won’t notice the difference in the technical/qualitative sector, but rather in the price segment.
With a connector of a less well-known manufacturer, the manufacturing costs are significantly lower
