Construction of coaxial and triaxial cables

Coaxial cables come in different forms, the biggest difference being the inner conductor (solid or stranded cable – rope made of several fine conductors) and the shielding (single or multiple). The selection of the right cable always depends on the application and the frequency to be transmitted.
Example: When used outdoors, care must be taken to use a suitable sheath, whereas for use in constant motion, a cable with stranded inner conductors and a braided shield should be selected. In the following overview you can compare the different cables and select the suitable one for your application.

Flexible coaxial cable – single shielded:

Construction of a single shielded coaxial cable:
1 = inner conductor – solid wire or stranded wire version (1b)
2 = dielektrikum / insulation
3 = shielding braid / foil
4 = outher sheath

Single shielded coaxial cables – characteristic impedance 50R

Single shielded coaxial cables – characteristic impedance 75R

Flexible coaxial cable – double shielded:

Construction of a double-shielded coaxial cable:

1 =Inner conductor – solid wire or stranded wire version (1b)
2 = dielectric / insulation
3a = shielding braid or foil
3b = shielding braid or foil
4 = outer sheath

Triaxial cable

1 = Inner conductor – solid wire or stranded wire version (1b)
2 = Dielectric / insulation
3 = Shielding braid or foil
4 = Dielectric / insulation
5 = Shielding braid or foil

6 = outer sheath

A triaxial cable is a special form of coaxial cable that consists of three concentric conductors. These are separated from each other by a dielectric and a shield. Fields of application are video technology and electrical measurement technology.
In the latter field, currents in the femtoampere range can be measured with a suitable setup using triaxial cables.
